Astronomers Just Witnessed A Whole Galaxy 'Turn On The Lights' In Real-Time

Then, about five years ago, something amazing happened: it suddenly lit up! Imagine if you walked into your house and every light just turned on by itself. That’s what happened with this galaxy.

Astronomers think they've seen a supermassive black hole—yes, one of those cosmic vacuum cleaners that gobble up everything—wake up from its nap. I mean, how often do you get to see a black hole waking up? Spoiler: Never. Until now.

Paula Sánchez Sáez, an astronomer at the European Southern Observatory, said it best: "Imagine you’ve been observing a distant galaxy for years, and it always seemed calm and inactive. Suddenly, its core starts showing dramatic changes in brightness, unlike any typical events we've seen before." That's like your pet cat suddenly doing a backflip—it’s unexpected and kind of awesome.

Scientists are used to stars brightening or dimming. Sometimes, galaxies have little flare-ups after a supernova or when a black hole eats a star, but those events are usually brief. What’s happening here is like turning on a light bulb and keeping it on for years. It’s unprecedented!



The team watching this spectacle includes scientists using NASA's Swift and Chandra X-ray observatories. They’ve been keeping an eye on SDSS1335+0728, and the brightness has just kept increasing. Sánchez Sáez and her colleagues even published their findings in the Astronomy & Astrophysics journal. You know it’s serious when it makes it into a scientific journal.

Now, black holes are some of the most mysterious things in the universe. They don't have surfaces like planets or stars. Instead, they have this boundary called an "event horizon," which is the point of no return. Anything that gets too close is done for. Stellar black holes are formed when huge stars die in supernova explosions and collapse into tiny, super-dense points. These things are usually sleeping giants—not something you see every day.

But supermassive black holes are even more elusive. These beasts are millions to billions of times more massive than the sun. Scientists think almost every galaxy has one at its center. Recent observations by the Hubble Space Telescope suggest these monsters start forming in the dusty cores of starburst galaxies, where new stars are born like crazy.

To understand why SDSS1335+0728 suddenly brightened, the team compared old data with new observations. They found that the galaxy, located in the constellation Virgo, started giving off more light in ultraviolet, optical, and infrared wavelengths. It even started emitting X-rays this February. Claudio Ricci from Diego Portales University in Chile said, "These giant monsters usually are sleeping and not directly visible. In the case of SDSS1335+0728, we were able to observe the awakening of the massive black hole, which suddenly started to feast on gas available in its surroundings, becoming very bright."

Talk about waking up hungry! It's like the black hole hit the cosmic buffet and went all-you-can-eat on the gas around it.

The team isn’t done yet. They want to rule out other explanations. Some scientists think the brightening might be due to an unusually long tidal disruption event, which is what happens when a star gets too close to a black hole and gets shredded. Or it could be something entirely new and exciting we haven't even thought of yet.

Remember, black holes were not even universally accepted as real about half a century ago. Now, we’re taking pictures of them! Humanity got its first glimpse of the Milky Way’s own central black hole, Sagittarius A*, in 2022, thanks to a bunch of synchronized radio dishes on Earth.




Figuring out what's happening with SDSS1335+0728's black hole could give us valuable insights into how these cosmic giants grow and evolve. Something similar could happen in our own galaxy one day. But don't worry, it’s not like our black hole is going to wake up and start causing trouble anytime soon. Probably.
